AFRC provides consultancy, research and technical services to the forest products, wood preservation, building & construction and pest management industries. We have over 100 years of combined, relevant experience amongst our staff.
We offer services in a range of areas, including evaluation of the resistance of materials against:
- Attack by wood destroying insects, in particular termites.
- Attack and degradation by wood-rotting fungi.
- Natural weathering e.g. UV radiation, precipitation etc.
We are also able to evaluate the efficacy of a variety of ‘pest management’ systems designed to deter or prevent termites from entering buildings. These include chemical, physical and combined chemical/physical systems, as well as baiting systems.
We can conduct experiments in accordance with a range of national and international standards. We have extensive laboratory facilities as well as multiple secure field test sites across Australia, where products can be exposed to severe termite and fungal hazards.
A key advantage of our test sites in northern Australia is that they provide a continuous hazard throughout the year, which means we can obtain test results in the shortest possible time. This can markedly reduce the product development cycle.
We can target all of Australia’s most economically important termite species, including Coptotermes spp., Mastotermes darwiniensis, Schedorhinotermes spp., Heterotermes spp. and Nasutitermes spp.
We conduct our own research to improve our understanding of the mechanisms underpinning material durability and to improve research and testing methodology.
Our mission is to assist our clients to validate the efficacy of their products and systems and thereby facilitate their entry into the marketplace in a seamless and timely manner.
